RAADHA MAADHAVAM (Samskritam)
Raadha Maadhavam
is about the union of the atma with the paramatma., represented by Raadha
and Maadhava. The twelfth century love lyrics are based on Jayadeva’s ashtapadi
in Sanskrit and has songs ideal for interpretations in dance. Some
of the musical score in this production is by Dhananjayan.
It was the
first production done for the inauguration of Doordarshan Television, Chennai,
in 1975. The Dhanajayans were asked to produce it in 2 days time! They
knew ashtapadis so well and having already done work for Hamsa Geethe,
it was useful to choreograph on just the 2 of them and put it up as a dance
drama.
The story depicts
Raadha’s anxiety to meet Krishna, his dalliance with the Gopis, Raadha’s
anger as the khandita nayika, Krishna asks forgiveness and the final reunion.
It was a
big challenge to create something different from the Gita Govindam that
we had presented when we were in Kalakshetra. We took some of the music,
which we had done for the film Hamsa Geethe. We had already created the
choreography, so we used that and as a duo, we presented Raadha Maadhavam.
In our later presentations, we introduced the 3rd character of a sakhi.
