STREE - The Woman (Tamizh)
It is the story
of Mary Magdalene, a biblical theme in Tamizh, written by Justice Nainar
Sundaram with music by Dhananjayan. It was a very innovative stage presentation
in many ways.
In the part
where the one who has not committed a sin can throw stones at Mary, the
whole sequence was done with bols. The dialogues between the citizens were
in the form of sounds, not lyrics.
Only simple
cotton saris were used for costumes.
Instead of
umpteen entries and exits, the scene had the citizens sitting around the
main characters and each one performed their role when their turns came.
The character would get up, do his/her part and go back and sit in his/her
place. That was a new idea then. The Dhananjayans had experimented even
that long ago and been successful in their innovative ways of composing
scenes.
"When Justice
Nainar approached us with his work, we were keen to take it up because
that was the time womens liberation movement was catching up. The ideas
we had in mind went with the contemporary theatre movement and the subject
was very effective as a social theme."
